THE CLIMATES OF TURKEY
Turkey’s climate is very varied, but it is usually mild, while in the coastal areas, it is more of a Mediterranean type climate. In the area of the Black Sea, it is more of an oceanic type, with hot and rainy summers. In the mountains the climate varies by up to 30 degrees difference from winter to summer, this gap extends into the continental climate of areas such as Anatolia.
THE WEST COAST
They meet the Mediterranean Sea and the Aegean Sea. Here you can enjoy dry and very hot summers, while the winters are wet and cold, not at all unbearable as in January (mid-winter) the temperature only drops to 10 degrees.
NORTH OF THE COUNTRY
Summers are hot and humid, while winters are just as cold as in the previous area. The temperature is a little lower in winter, 6 degrees. Here it rains more.
EAST AND SOUTH EAST
Here the climate is more extreme, the winter is very cold, while the summer is very hot, is so strong that it is not at all advisable to go in August.
THE SOUTH COAST
It has a warm climate, especially between March and May or between September and December. The summer has a pleasantly warm climate for going to the beaches or hiking in the mountains.
WHAT TIME OF YEAR SHOULD I ORGANIZE MY TRAVEL TO TURKEY?
The best time you should plan your travel to Turkey in the spring or autumn season, from March to May or September to October. Try to avoid travelling in November or February. If you go north, you can do so between May and September.
HOW ARE THE SEASONS IN TURKEY?
SPRING
It has an ideal and mild climate for tourism, but keep in mind that like any season, hot and cold waves can occur suddenly.
SUMMER
They are very hot and with few manifestations of rain, temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C. The nights are not very cold.
AUTUMN
The average temperature is between 18°C and 23°C, the climate is pleasant. It can rain and in some areas of the country the climate can drop to 10°C. The blizzards, coming from the south, are moderately strong.
WINTER
It’s very cold, as well as rainy. Temperatures fall below zero degrees and it usually snows.
HOW IS THE CLIMATE IN THE MAIN CITIES OF TURKEY?
ISTANBUL
Here the winters are very cold and rainy, sometimes it snows, so it is better not to travel in November or February, while in summer the heat is strong and dry, unless, of course, you want to attend the festivals that are in the city.
EFFECT
The best months to visit are between March and October. Besides the good weather, you will find cultural festivals and a brilliant sun to swim in the crystal clear waters of its beaches.
ANTALYA
The climate ranges from 10.5°C to 28°C. The rain is considerable, but in June and September it never rains. In winter it is quite the opposite, and there is quite frequent sunshine. In summer the sky is clear.
INEGOLU
It has cool summers and mild winters. In summer, there is a lot of local and foreign tourism.
RIZE
It rains a lot here all year round. The winter is milder than in Istanbul. Snowfalls are rare. The sun doesn’t shine much, just five hours of sunshine a day.
ANKARA
The rainy season usually occurs in winter and spring. The winter is cold and snowy, with a climate between 1°C and -20°C. The summer is hot, dry and torrid during the day. The heat peaks can reach 40°C.
ANTITAURO
Here the climate is more “Russian”, with icy cold, although with hot and dry summers.
TRABZON
The temperature ranges from 7.5°C to 23.5°C, rain is moderate and minimal in summer. There is not much sunshine. The sea is warmer than in Istanbul.
CAPADOCIA
We recommend you not to visit it in winter, it can be very cold, in January the temperature can go down to -3°C, while in August it can go up to 32°C. It is ideal to visit it between March and October. The climate here is extreme throughout the year, it is in seasons like spring where you find a pleasant climate.
IZMIR
The winter is mild, with cold peaks that can reach 9°C. There are cold waves, but they are short and rare, unlike in Istanbul. The summer is very hot and sunny. There are peaks of heat that can reach 40°C.
ANATOLIA
In June and September the weather is good and with zero rainfall you can discover nature.
SOME TRAVEL TIPS FOR TURKEY
- If you travel in summer (July, August and September), bear in mind that you will meet many European tourists, as they usually take their holidays during these dates.
- It is best to visit the Black Sea coast between April and September, where you will enjoy a pleasant climate and be able to do outdoor activities such as hiking.
- Try not to travel in August to Turkey, in some areas it is very hot, especially the east, southeast and Istanbul. If you still consider doing so, travel to the north of the country.
- In July you can enjoy an international festival of opera, classical music and dance if you travel to Izmir.
